The back-and-forth that delays a custom crate quote almost always comes down to missing information, not a complicated product. Give a packaging supplier the full picture upfront and most quotes can be finalised in a single round.

Dimensions and Weight, Precisely

Overall length, width, and height including any protruding parts, plus gross weight. Round numbers cause real problems here — a crate designed to 'about 2 metres' can end up too tight for a part that's actually 2.05 metres once brackets or fittings are accounted for.

Centre of Gravity and Load-Bearing Points

For anything asymmetric or top-heavy, tell your supplier where the weight actually sits and where the item can safely be supported or lifted from. This single detail changes skid placement, bracing design, and whether the crate needs additional base reinforcement.

Handling Method at Every Stage

• Will it be forklifted, craned, or manually moved at origin and at destination?
• Does the crate need forklift pockets on all four sides, or is access only from two sides?
• Will it be lifted by the crate itself (via lifting lugs) or only ever moved on a forklift?

Environmental Exposure

Specify whether the crate will sit in open yard storage, go by sea, or stay in a climate-controlled environment throughout. This determines whether you need a weatherproof sheathed crate, an internal moisture barrier, or a simple skeletal frame is sufficient.

Number of Handling Events

A crate that's loaded once and unloaded once at destination can be built lighter than one that will be trans-shipped through two or three ports, each involving a crane lift and stacking. Tell your supplier the full logistics route, not just origin and destination.

ISPM-15 Requirement

If the crate is for export, confirm your supplier heat-treats and IPPC-stamps as standard — this should be assumed for any international shipment, but it's worth confirming rather than finding out at customs.

With dimensions, weight, centre of gravity, handling method, environmental exposure, and route confirmed, a good packaging partner can usually turn around an accurate quote and drawing without a second round of questions.
